Let Your Light Shine

Let Your Light Shine

Have you ever had the feeling that you just didn’t belong in a certain place, group, etc. Were there moments of uneasiness? Did you evaluate your surroundings? What did you see? Could you identify yourself with the people that were around you?

In the beginning, God made it very clear that light and darkness were to be separate. Then God said, “Let there be light;” and there was light. And God divided the light from the darkness (Genesis 1:3-4).

When I was in elementary school, I was bullied by older kids. It got so bad to the point that I started disliking myself and I found myself wanting to be someone else. I wanted to be able to fit in and be accepted, disregarding what it took to get it. I didn’t want my shy and quiet personality to keep me from the crowd. So what did I do? I made myself fit in by showing a side of me that wasn’t truly me. I got comfortable living a double life so I kept it going, not fully understanding the dangers that surrounded it.

We choose darkness just so that we can fit in, not knowing the dangers that come with it.

I used to wonder why I had those moments of uneasiness and why I just didn’t fit in with everybody else. From the very beginning I believe that God’s plan was already in action in my life. In Ephesians, Paul tells us that God chose us before He laid the foundation of the world. “Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will” (Ephesians 1:4-5). His plan of salvation was already in the works before time. He was thinking of us the entire time. Isn’t that amazing?

We have to be mindful that as believers, we should live to please God and not man. We do not need someone else’s validation or approval just to be liked. We were meant to stand out and not fit in. We were meant to shine so that others can see! So when you have those moments of discomfort that arise, follow them. That’s the Holy Spirit reminding you that you weren’t meant to fit in, that darkness is not what He desires for you. Be reminded that you are the temple of the living God and shouldn’t do anything that would make Him uncomfortable.

Today I just want to remind you that you don’t have to fit in with the world. Instead, God has called you to be a light for the world. Take the following Scriptures to heart:

“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9).

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).

Go forth and shine! Don’t allow darkness to extinguish your light! You were called to shine not to fit in! “And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it” (John 1:5).
